I took a ride in a self-driving Waymo taxi back in 2023. Sat in the back seat and took a deep breath before the ride. It wasn’t a wild ride. The Waymo was a very cautious driver. But the lack of control was like being on the back of a bike with someone you marginally trust. At least I could watch the steering wheel turn gently into each curve as it steered me toward a street taco place in Phoenix. The steering wheel (and the map on the digital console) gave me a sense of what it was doing and where it was going. In article 2, Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton told the UN Digital World Conference that AI is “a very fast car with no steering wheel,” and it needs regulation as it races towards superintelligence.
